A quick lunch at BAD BIRD SM Megamall

There are times that we usually look for something new to eat, something different to the palate than what we used to. And my feet brought me here (together with my colleague at work) - Bad Bird at SM Megamall.

The place has a bit dark but energetic vibe. The dining area is dim, having a bit of a spotlight aligned with the dining tables. This restaurant branch only has about 20 to 30 seater, which will make the service better and easier to manage.

Their menu is not that elaborate. I noticed that it contains sets good for sharing and combo meals good for one. Their menu layout is neat and has a very energetic vibe on it. Feels like I'm going to read an interesting comic book. 😂

For our starter, we ordered 1 small plate of Kimchi for only Php 70. The cabbage is crisp and for me, the level of spiciness is just fine.

I just have one question -- should Kimchi be served cold or hot? It's actually my first time trying Kimchi, and I thought it should be served hot especially in cold weather. I watched Korean reality shows and saw that Kimchis were served hot. But on the other hand, I also watched some that it can be refrigerated.

We were served with cold water in a 500ml cute, handy, pitcher.

My colleague ordered Dirty Rice Plate, Chemical (Php 250 for 1pc umami fried chicken; 390 for 2pcs chicken). They have three levels of spiciness -- Safe, Spicy, and Chemical. She ordered 1pc Chemical Dirty Rice Plate, where she was a bit disappointed considering it was the highest level of spiciness. It wasn't as hot as she was expecting it to be. She had to ask for togarashi. Not sure if she just love very spicy food.

The meat isn't spicy as well and tasted bland, seemed that the spice is only coming from its breading.

The dirty rice? It's good! The bacon-chicken liver relationship is goals! 😉

I ordered Boneless Chicken Thigh (Php 340), paired with black pepper sauce, Scallion Pancakes and shredded cabbages with roasted sesame dressing.

I find the chicken thigh "malansa". It's normal with chicken thighs but I hoped they did some marination to remove the off taste. It says boneless, but I chewed about 5 white bones in this little serving of grilled chicken thigh slices.

The scallion pancakes are good, probably my favorite side. The sauce also compliments the chicken, although it doesn't cover the "lansa" taste of the chicken.

The bitter taste of red cabbage is very pronounce. I suggest it should sit with salt for a few minutes and wash off with cold water. I ended up not finishing it.

The rice, for me, is not good.... I thought it was Japanese Rice, but it was just a plain, short grain rice. It seemed to be cooked with more water to achieve the sticky texture.

I ordered Lemon Grass Iced Tea (Php 90). It was way to sweet! I can really taste the sugar syrup in it and had to add lots of water just to balance the taste.

Overall, the restaurant is still good to have your quick, affordable lunch. The service is fast because the place is also manageable. We were actually surprised that the Dirty Rice Plate was served in less than 7 minutes. Maybe some of the products were already pre-made to avoid longer service time.

The ambiance from the outside is not that appealing (for me), but once you take a closer look into the concept, it feels energetic and youthful. I like the interior - from lights, tables, utensils and wares. I feel like they are very expensive judging on the material and the look 😃.

Value for money - fair enough. I just wish the rice will be of better quality next time. The chicken, they should add more flavor on the meat.

Still worth to try it out! If I'm going to dine again, gonna try other dishes too. 😊
